Google introduced its new smartphone on August 13th, amidst the company's race to integrate AI into hardware. A standout feature is the ability to search for information within screenshots. Android users can also interact with the Gemini chatbot as an overlay on another app to answer questions or create content within the overlaid app.

Google said Gemini Designed to handle complex tasks without sending data to third parties, similar to how Apple uses Apple Intelligence, Gemini analyzes data directly on the smartphone to provide personalized suggestions such as scheduling appointments, composing messages, and summarizing documents. Additionally, the Add Me feature on the Pixel 9 allows you to combine two separate group selfies into one, creating a single photo that includes everyone.
Google also introduced Gemini Live, exclusive to the Pro models, allowing users to have natural conversations with the AI assistant. During the conversation, users can interrupt or change the topic, and Gemini will adapt seamlessly. The Live version will be rolled out first to Gemini Advanced subscribers.
The Pro models will also feature an upgraded Video Boost function, which improves video recording capabilities. The new version allows upscaling 4K video to 8K using AI via Google's cloud and sending it back to the smartphone. However, this feature requires significant bandwidth.
“When it comes to AI, there’s a lot of promise, a lot of things predicted to happen, but nothing useful enough in the real world. That’s why today we’re really serious about the new phone. We’re in the Gemini era,” said Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services.
The event also broke another Google tradition: Pixel phones are now announced in the summer instead of the fall, a tradition that has persisted since the device launched in 2016.
“Two things consumers are looking for in AI right now are the ability to seamlessly communicate with devices and create content on them. I think Google has done well in both,” Linn Huang, an analyst at IDC, told. Reuters.
“I’ve attended many Google events. This was not only one of the most elaborate, but also the most comprehensive when it came to AI,” commented Avi Greengart, an analyst at Techsponential. “Google has proven they are at the forefront of AI.”.
