AI Gemini embarrasses Google again: Makes a basic mistake right in the ad

Even the Gemini commercial contains a basic mistake regarding the use of film cameras.

Google has once again found itself embroiled in controversy over its AI providing inaccurate information, this time in a promotional video for its Gemini-powered search engine. The launch of Gemini took place just one day after OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT-4o, underscoring how the AI race is becoming increasingly intense.

Both tech companies have released impressive promotional videos showcasing the capabilities of AI, promising to revolutionize the way we interact with information. However, Google’s promotional video for Gemini was quickly called out by the online community for containing serious factual errors.

In the video, Gemini was asked to suggest a solution for a jammed film camera, with the question: “Why won’t this lever move all the way?” Gemini listed a series of solutions, including one that was extremely harmful: “Open the back cover and gently remove the film if the camera is jammed“.

Anyone who has ever used a film camera knows that opening the camera’s back while outdoors in bright light will ruin the entire roll of film. This mistake, first spotted by The Verge, highlights the potential risks of using AI chatbots, which frequently suffer from “hallucinations” and provide inaccurate information.

This isn’t the first time Google has run into trouble with AI. Last year, the Bard chatbot came under fire for providing inaccurate information about the James Webb Space Telescope, claiming it was the first telescope to capture an image of a planet outside our solar system.

Earlier this year, Gemini also faced controversy for refusing to generate images of white people, facing accusations of being “too woke” and creating historically inaccurate depictions such as “Asian Nazis” or “Black founding fathers of the United States.” Google’s leadership was forced to issue an apology, acknowledging that they “had missed the mark.”.

Mistakes made by AI chatbots not only frustrate users but can also lead to legal consequences for the companies that use them. Last February, a Canadian court held Air Canada liable because its chatbot provided inaccurate information about a discount program for the relatives of a deceased passenger.

The examples above show that Google still has a lot of work to do to ensure the accuracy and reliability of its AI. Tech companies need to be more cautious in developing and deploying AI to avoid regrettable mistakes that could damage their reputation and expose them to legal liability.
